The idea that ECM is just a way of managing your documents is archaic and invalid in today’s business world. The reason behind this is that ECM software is evolving into actively using the stored content rather than just storing the content. This evolution of the product is being denoted as Content Services. This isn’t your Grandpa’s ECM.
If you dust off the keyboard and head over to this thing called Google, it will tell you that Content Services is:
“A set of services and microservices, embodied either as an integrated product suite or as separate applications that share common APIs and repositories, to exploit diverse content types and to serve multiple constituencies and numerous use cases across an organization.”*
Now this is just a fancy way of saying, we used to store your documents and you could retrieve them, but NOW you can do stuff with those documents. Oh, and it doesn’t just store documents anymore. We can store anything you need, videos, audio files, objects for case management, etc. She had a good run, but Content Services, is in the words of Kanye West “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” than ECM ever was.
