Lean Office 101: Planning

Let’s get lean. Or maybe let’s get leaner. Over the past few years we have really tried to practice what we preach. We have made some great strides, but we have to continue to see where we can get better. We have successfully implemented Lean Processes in both AP and Out of Territory Billing, but now we are looking to tackle the “mother of all processes”, the Order Process.
So today was day one (step one). Lynnanne, Dave, Scott and I met for the first time to look at the Order Process. Scott gave it a B+, but as we talked more about it we realized that, like all our clients, we too have many of the symptoms we talk to our customers about. We ended up agreeing that it was probably closer to a C. Functional, but fat. We already feel that we do a great job, but there is plenty of room for improvement when it comes to the frustration factor. And I am sure that we are not the only ones that wish the information flowed easier among the different departments involved in the process. That all being said, we don’t want to put the cart before the horse… we need to nail down the company goals before we dive in too much here. Once we are done with that we should be ready to move on to step two. Is it weird to be excited to get a process map in place?
